Niagara Region, Ontario, [Nov 18, 2024] — Red Jar Capital Corp. (RJCC) is pleased to announce the sale of its 146MW non-critical data centre facility, located in Thorold, Ontario. Spanning 100,000 square feet, the facility currently hosts 20,000 dedicated bitcoin mining computers and is transmission-connected to the Ontario grid with on-site 230kv-13.8kv transformers.
Red Jar began developing the site in 2021, identifying an opportunity to re-use existing electricity infrastructure in a former paper mill. Red Jar worked through the necessary regulatory channels, securing the right to draw power to the limit of the transmission line. While adding substantial electrical infrastructure, including additional transformation, the Red Jar team has also worked to renew the site’s aging electrical infrastructure, adding much more sophisticated controls and metering to enable real time energy management – allowing this site to quickly react to grid needs. Since energization, the site has reliably curtailed on days when the grid is stressed and has served as a highly reliable source of operating reserve, providing reinforcing support to the grid. The site was initially energized in late 2021, with current total operational capacity of 50MW.
Red Jar will continue to support the data centre and its new owner with select operational input, energy management and regulatory support, including advising on future expansion. The next phase, adding approximately 25MW, is already underway, with plans for an additional 60+MW to reach the total approved capacity of 146MW.
Under the banner Red Jar Digital Infrastructure (RJDI) , RJCC partnered with Brothers Marketing Inc (BMI) and Round 13 Capital (Round 13) to build this data centre facility. An affiliate of BMI is the owner of the land and building where the facility is located, and contributed their expertise in the construction of the facility. Round 13 is an experienced technology venture investor, across a number of verticals. RJDI represented its first investment into the digital asset space.
