NIAGARA POWER CORRIDOR

PROJECT SUMMARY

The Niagara Power Corridor (NPC) is an 18 km, 230 kV dual-circuit transmission line running along the east side of the Welland Canal, extending from Thorold to Port Colborne. This project is critical for providing power to Asahi Kasei’s new multi-billion-dollar battery separator manufacturing plant being constructed in Port Colborne, Ontario, ensuring the necessary infrastructure is in place to support Ontario’s expanding electric vehicle (EV) strategy. Specifically, RJEP is contracted with Asahi Kasei (AK) to provide the power infrastructure required for the project to connect to the provincial grid and enable it to draw sufficient power to energize the new plant on its requisite timeline.

THE IMPACT

The South Niagara region is experiencing strong and growing demand for industrial-scale power, and the Niagara Power Corridor is being developed to address this critical need. Initially, the transmission line will deliver 118 MW of power to the Asahi Kasei site, with additional capacity available for future expansion to meet the medium and long-term power needs of the region.

This project lays the foundation for sustained industrial growth and investment in the City of Port Colborne and the wider Niagara Region. It represents a key piece of infrastructure necessary to support the long-term economic prosperity of the area, enabling industrial expansion and fostering job creation.

The NPC project is uniquely positioned to deliver power to the Asahi Kasei site within the required timelines, two years faster than current alternatives. By accelerating access to reliable power, this project directly supports significant economic growth and strengthens the region’s potential for industrial development.
