THORLD DATA CENTRE DEVELOPMENT
PROJECT SUMMARY
Development and construction of a non-critical data centre facility dedicated to high-uptime mining operations. Spanning 100,000 square feet, the facility currently hosts over 20,000 dedicated bitcoin mining computers and is transmission connected to the Ontario grid at 230kV. The site was initially energized in late 2021, currently operating at 80MW, with plans to reach total approved capacity of 146MW.
On May 10, 2024, Red Jar announced the sale of the facility to a strategic buyer in the industry. Red Jar continues to support the buyer with select operational support, energy management and regulatory guidance, in conjunction with the future expansion of the current location, and identification and development of potential sites.
THE IMPACT
The Red Jar team revitalized aging electrical infrastructure and implemented advanced controls and metering systems. These improvements enabled real-time energy management and allowed the site to respond quickly and efficiently to grid needs.
A strong emphasis was placed on reusing and recycling energy assets, through the innovative repurposing of existing on-site infrastructure. The project also created new revenue opportunities for the electricity system through the use of existing transmission assets, provided enhanced grid flexibility, and generated local jobs.
The team also navigated complex regulatory channels to secure the right to draw power up to the full capacity of the transmission line. Advanced energy management strategies—such as strategic curtailment strategies and participation in Capacity Auction and Operating Reserve Markets—positioned the facility as a model for efficient, grid responsive energy solutions.
