A Weekend in Iqaluit: Hockey and Community Coming Together

This past weekend in Iqaluit, Nunavut, we were proud to support something truly special.
As the founding sponsor of the Hockey Helps the Homeless Nunavut Northern Alumni Classic, Red Jar Energy Partners had the opportunity to be part of an event that was about far more than hockey.
From school visits and youth programming to the Toronto Maple Leafs vs. HHTH Alumni game and the Tea and Bannock Cup, the weekend created meaningful moments of connection, inspiration, and shared experience. Seeing players like Jordin Tootoo, Joe Thornton not just on the ice, but engaging with the community throughout the weekend, made those moments even more impactful. It was a privilege to spend time in the community, connect with local leaders and residents, and experience the culture, warmth, and hospitality that make Nunavut so unique.
Paul Langlois of The Tragically Hip was part of a special night of music during the weekend, where Hip songs were played alongside a local Inuit band, including throat singers, bringing people and cultures together in a real and memorable way.
Our time spent in the community gave us the chance to connect with the Inuit community, listen, learn, and be present. Being there offered a deeper appreciation for the people and life in Iqaluit.
We are proud to have supported a highly successful inaugural event, with proceeds benefiting the Annauma Community Foundation and the Qajuqturvik Community Food Centre. These organizations are doing critical work to support food security, housing, and community wellness across Nunavut.
Thank you to Hockey Helps the Homeless, the sponsors, the local organizing committee, and the Iqaluit community for an unforgettable weekend.
