Red Jar Energy Partners (RJEP) and its project partner, Mississaugas of the Credit Business Corporation (MCBC), collectively the Niagara Power Corridor (NPC) Project Partners, are announcing a change in approach to power for RJEP’s NPC and its Red Jar Niagara Transformation Station (RJNTS).
Following extensive discussions with Asahi Kasei Battery Separator Canada (Asahi Kasei), the NPC Project Partners and Asahi Kasei intend to collaborate with Hydro One to deliver a solution to connect Asahi Kasei’s Port Colborne lithium-ion battery separator manufacturing facility to Ontario’s electricity grid. This proposed path forward was determined to be the most practical, cost-effective and efficient way to support the power requirements of Asahi Kasei’s manufacturing facility, which will be operational in 2027, as well as the broader Niagara Region.
Consequently, Red Jar Niagara Power Company Ltd. and Asahi Kasei have agreed to terminate their existing electricity and transmission services arrangements. This mutual decision was reached amicably and both parties are committed to supporting each other through the development of an alternative, innovative solution that leverages Hydro One’s Welland Thorold Power Line for the supply of electricity to Asahi Kasei’s battery separator plant.
“Over the past two years, Red Jar and its Niagara Power Corridor Project Partners have worked closely with Asahi Kasei to identify and begin to develop the power infrastructure necessary to support our future manufacturing operations,” said Samuel A. Mills, President of Asahi Kasei Battery Separator Canada. “We appreciate the progress that has already been made and are grateful for the ongoing support we continue to receive from the local community, including the Mississaugas of the Credit and other First Nations.”
“We are proud to have worked with our partners to develop a solution that supports economic development and strengthens energy resilience across Niagara,” said Jason Sparaga, Managing Operating Partner at Red Jar Energy Partners. “Red Jar played a pivotal role in attracting Asahi Kasei to Port Colborne, alongside the Niagara Region Task Force, and the City of Port Colborne. We remain committed to doing everything we can to support the project’s long-term success here in Ontario”, added Sparaga.
This solution marks a major step forward in powering Ontario’s electric vehicle supply chain and driving regional growth through coordinated energy infrastructure delivery.
